Remarketing vs. Retargeting: What’s the Difference?

Posted by Catherine Hatch on Fri, Dec 29, 2017 @ 10:30 AM

Having a strong website is a great way to convert leads into sales. However, only 2% of web traffic converts to a sale on the first visit. Remarketing and retargeting are strategies that attempt to reach the other 98% of visitors who don’t make a purchase. Both of these strategies are effective in reaching out to site visitors, but they work in different ways. Read below for a breakdown of these two strategies.

Retargeting

Retargeting involves following visitors around the web after they leave your site. When a visitor goes to your site, they drop a browser cookie that will follow them when they travel to other sites. The cookie will attract visitors back to your site, typically in the form of a display ad. These ads are only visible to people who have already showed interest in your site but haven’t made a purchase.

Remarketing

Remarketing typically involves re-engaging with customers via email. This type of strategy might involve shopping cart abandonment email campaigns or attempts to upsell. You might also consider offering VIP treatment or promoting special sales. Remarketing encourages visitors who have engaged with your site to return and make a purchase.

How are They Related?

Both of these strategies have a similar goal: to reach customers that left your site without making a purchase. However, these two strategies target different types of visitors. Remarketing is used for visitors who have engaged with your site and provided an email, while retargeting targets visitors that have simply visited your site. In both cases, the strategies aim to reach those who have visited your site in order to close a sale.

Can You do Both?

Remarketing and retargeting can actually work well together. Retargeting will help remind visitors about your site in order to keep your company in the back of their minds. Remarketing is a great way to get visitors further along in the purchasing process to buy. These strategies can work together to close many more sales than your website would close on its own.
